Sao Paulo

ImageI wrote a while ago that Sao Paulo is a beautiful city. I take that back. I had not seen then what I have seen now. It's an extremely big city; with the surrounding suburbs around 24 million people live there (no one really knows...). If you want to think that it's beautiful city you have to limit yourself to a very small part of it. And even then it's hard, because in Sao Paulo everything is mixed together - the beauty and the dirt, the old and the new, the darkness and the light. But as in every city you can live there for a long time and be unaware of many of the things that goes on there. You see only what you want to see. I went there to see reality.

It's hard to describe Sao Paulo. It's big, very big. It's dirty, lots of trash and lots of pollution. Most houses are old and worn down. The river smells very bad. The few parks are inhabited by homeless people; the fountains are for washing and the benches are beds. At night not many parts of the city are safe. Prostitutes, transvestites and drugdealers are everywhere. Many streets are crowded; the homeless are joined by young people and tourists who wants to party. It's a dark place in many ways.

Is it strange that Sao Paulo has a special place in my heart? Maybe. But I love it there. I hate it, but I love it. I take back that it's a beautiful city, but I can't take back that I like it, that I feel at home. I'm still trying to figure it out...

Cause it's not all bad; good things - amazing things - go on there to. Things of God.
