The Barbarian Way . . .

THE BARBARIAN WAY

The entire focus of our faith has been the elimination of sin, which is important but inadequate, rather than the unleashing of a unique, original, extraordinary, wonderfully untamed faith.'

'How many of us would actually expect the person who came to prepare the way for Christ to present himself wearing animal skins, eating locusts, and wandering around in the desert? If he lived today, he would be medicated and diagnosed bipolar. He would be one more certified lunatic. And thats just what would happen if the church were in charge of his diagnosis. Most of us would think that John was out of his mind.

Confronted by John, we have to stop and ask ourselves: "If this is what the person looked like who prepared the way for Jesus, then what should a disciple of Jesus Christ look like who comes after Jesus? How is it possible that for many of us being a good Christian is nothing more than being a good person?" The entire focus of our faith has been the elimination of sin, which is important but inadequate, rather than the unleashing of a unique, original, extraordinary, wonderfully untamed faith.'

from, 'The Barbarian Way' by Erwin Raphael McManus, Nelson Books.

This book is a real and honest look at what it really means to follow Jesus. This isnt the nice, 'comfortable,' kind of discipleship we hear so much about. It looks at the life of John the Baptist in particular and how he had to follow Jesus into situations and experieces he never dreamed. This is real, raw and brutal Christianity!
