I have something I need to share with you. If I would only tell you one thing about this week, this is what I would say. Maybe next month this is still what I will remember, maybe next year this will still be the first thing I say. I know I will never forget it.

A few weeks ago I told you about Mom's day out and the street kids we take care of there. I told you about the pain of seeing children so broken, the feeling of helplessness and frustration. I asked why, why are they in the situation they are in, what have they done wrong? How is this fair? I haven't found an answer to that yet.

I don't think there is one.

But I've found an answer to another question, to another why. Why do we keep going? Why do we keep fighting for these kids and their parents? What makes it worth it?

I told you about a little boy there, a cute two-year-old who was sad and tired all the time, and how that just broke my heart. Last thursday he gave me an answer to my question.

We had a thanksgiving dinner with the kids - mashed potatoes and turkey. They loved it. When the bigger kids were getting ready to go back to the playroom, the little two-year-old sat in his highchair and played with his cup. I was cleaning up when I heard something - something so wonderful that I had to stop and turn around. There he was, sitting in his chair, not only smiling, but laughing! He showed all his beautiful white teeth in a big smile, over and over again. And the sound... little kids laughing must be the most beautiful sound ever. He giggled and laughed while playing with his cup. Just like that, out of nowhere. Because of a cup. I and the other girls just stood there and looked at him. It was the first time we heard him laugh, the first time we saw him smile. And it was beautiful.

That's why we do it. That's why it's worth it. When you see someone smile, hear someone laugh. It's all worth it.

Even if it's only one person.

I will never forget that one boys smile.
