February 2007

I have been in Houston for four weeks now. It is such a privilege to be here with young hope, serving Jesus in this city. God has shown me so much already and I'm excited for what He is going to do in and through me in the next few months. I have loved getting to be a part of the different ministries here.

On Wednesday nights we go to downtown Houston, to an area called Montrose, for Street Church. It is heart breaking to see little children who are living in such poverty and spend much of their lives on the streets. But it also fills me with hope to hear the stories of those who are off the streets and who are now living for Jesus.

Destiny's door is on Thursdays. It is a class for teenage mom's. For the past few weeks we have been working on self-esteem and how to develop it in their children. It is really encouraging to see young girls who are such good parents to their children. Some of the girls are in very hard situations so it is great to get to spend time talking to them and praying for them. On Friday nioghts we walk the streets of Montrose with Preacher Joe(thats what all the street kids call him!!). We give out food and water and pray for people. Joe has been going down there for years and is known and respected by a lot of the street kids.

I have loved getting to meet people like Preacher Joe and Martin and Kim (who run street church), people who are just living for Jesus and serving Him and providing practical help for people on the streets. I am seeing in new ways God's graciousness and overwhelming love and care for people. I keep thinking of verses in Zecariah 10: 'The Lord will care for His flock. I will restore them because I have compassion on them'.
